Why You Should Throw Your Scale Away!
The scale is just another object getting in the way of reaching your fullest potential.
By the title of this article, you can probably guess that I don’t own a scale. This wasn’t always the case. I used to think that the number on the scale dictated my health, beauty, happiness, and how good or bad of a day I was going to have. Until I realized that number actually means NOTHING. Well, it means something. But definitely not my self worth.
If you can relate to this story so far, I encourage you to continue reading and hopefully by the end I will have convinced you to say good riddance to your scale.
Yes, the scale serves a purpose at certain times for certain people. But for the majority of us… the scale doesn’t give us the information (or validation) we are looking for. So why are we so fixated on our weight? We have somehow been convinced that weighing a certain amount means we are healthy and beautiful. However, most people don’t understand (or refuse to believe/acknowledge) that the scale doesn’t tell us the whole story.
Your weight is just a number. PERIOD.
The thing is, scales don’t take into account everything that is going on in your body (muscle mass, water weight, bone density, etc.). Not to mention, it’s normal and healthy for your weight to fluctuate day-by-day or even hour-by-hour. It all depends on what you eat and drink, and how you exercise and sleep, even your menstrual cycle can affect the status of your weight.
Because scales don’t paint the whole picture, it can feel discouraging after stepping on a scale and expecting to see a smaller number even though your clothes might be fitting better, you feel better mentally, and you’re performing better in the gym. Therefore, your progress should not be determined by what you weigh.
Basically, the scale only defines you if you let it.
So… Throw. It. Out.
