Not Your Typical Gym-A Glimpse into the Movement Lab

If you walk into almost any health or fitness club, you will most likely notice the abundance of exercise equipment ranging from ellipticals to pec deck machines. Although there may be a time and a place for these fancy-looking machines, they may not be serving you all the ingredients you need to achieve your goals. Walking into the Movement Lab at Focus on Health, you won’t see treadmills or leg extension machines. Instead, you’ll find an approach to fitness that focuses on movement function and competency. Here’s why…

Machines commonly used in gyms were invented to provide a safer alternative to free weights. Ironically, these machines are anything but an injury waiting to happen. Our bodies are designed to move in many planes of motion requiring mobility and stability. Most machines only allow the body to move through a fixed plane of motion encouraging faulty, unnatural movement patterns and limiting full range of motion.

In the Movement Lab, our goal is to challenge movement in a more applicable way to everyday life. We utilize the Functional Movement Screen to identify movement characteristics and develop a training program specific to your needs. Our method does not require elaborate machines, rather simpler equipment catered to enhance training around real-world biomechanics. By encouraging free movement, we are coordinating important aspects often neglected with machines. This provides an opportunity to get you moving efficiently, competently and confidently!
